Carnival Cruise Line released three brand-new cruise ships for its Excel Class between 2021 and 2023. Following the success of this class, Carnival Cruise Line has only released plans for building one additional new cruise ship in 2025 and none in 2026. The debut of the Excel Class marked a maritime milestone for Carnival Cruise Line, as the company had never built a ship as big or advanced in its history. The flagship vessel, Mardi Gras, was nearly 40% bigger than anything the cruise line had built before.

Utopia is set to be 10 feet stubbier, two decks shorter, and 13,940 gross-tons lighter. More specifically, Icon of the Seas measures 1,198 feet long—nearly a quarter of a mile—and has a gross tonnage of 250,800. All that space means it can accommodate 5,600 guests and 2,350 crew members.

Scheduled to debut in February, the 180,000-ton vessel will be nearly 35% bigger than the biggest Carnival ship currently afloat, the just-unveiled Carnival Panorama, and one of the 10 biggest cruise ships ever from any line. The previous world’s largest cruise ship was also a Royal Caribbean vessel, Wonder of the Seas, which spanned 1,188 feet long and featured 18 decks. The cruise line has announced it's building the largest cruise ship ever — even bigger than its recently unveiled Wonder of the Seas, the current record-holder for world's largest cruise ship. The new Icon of the Seas will carry 7,600 passengers at maximum occupancy (or nearly 10,000 people when you account for the crew) when it first sets sail with guests Jan. 28, 2024. Giant mass-market floating resorts also often attract first-time cruisers, enamored by their family-friendly water parks and Broadway-style shows.

Already, one of the vessels -- MSC Grandiosa -- is sailing again in the Mediterranean, albeit on cruises that only are open to residents of Europe's Schengen countries. At this size, the vessel surpasses any previous Oasis class ship once built to be the world's largest, setting a strong precident for the upcoming Icon Class. In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland.

At 1,196 feet long and weighing 248,663 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas is a sight to behold. When it launched in late January, the giant vessel upstaged its eight-foot shorter predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas, as the world's biggest. Royal Caribbean's first Oasis Class ship, Oasis of the Seas, began sailing in 2009.

At 250,800 tons, Icon of the Seas is the first in a new series of ships at Royal Caribbean that will be bigger than anything seen before. Norwegian Encore also is home to nearly 30 eateries, lounges and bars; Broadway shows; a sprawling spa; a casino that fills half a deck; and more than 2,000 rooms. There also will be a central interior promenade with entertainment, shops and bars. MSC World Europa will be 21 decks high — three decks higher than the Oasis Class ships.

As the first ship in the cruise line’s new Sphere class, Sun Princess will be stationed at Port Everglades during the winter 2024 cruise season after completing a season of Mediterranean and Europe cruises from February to September 2024. At 169,116 tons, Norwegian Encore isn't quite as super-sized as the three ships above.
